This painting was inspired by a grainy 1970s documentary film showing flight operations aboard HMS Ark Royal. In particular, I was enthralled by the noise, power and drama of a missed trap, or ‘bolter’, and thought it would be an exciting challenge to try and capture the intensity of that split second as the aircraft thunders off the deck back into the air.
The original painting was exhibited and sold at the 2015 Guild of Aviation Artists’ Annual Summer Exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London.
