A puff of smoke from the tyres as this Lighting F2 touches down at RAF Leconfield, East Riding of Yorkshire in the early 1960s. Recently I’ve been tempted to recreate this scene in oils as I think the dark blue tail together with the red and yellow flash to the roundel would look wonderful, one for the ‘to do’ list I think.
The original illustration was exhibited and sold at the 2005 Guild of Aviation Artists’ Annual Summer Exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London where it won the ‘Quantas Trophy’ for the best work in other media.
