English Electric Lightning F1, 74 Squadron.
23x16inches (60x42cm), Pencil on cartridge paper.
Private collection.
I’ve read in various places that landing a Lightning was akin to a controlled crash but I’m sure those in the cockpit would have a different view. For many, the early Lightnings in their polished aluminium finish represent the golden age of British aviation and for me, the challenge was to try and capture the myriad of reflections, highlights and shadows generated by this material with just a pencil. I have to say it’s a time-consuming process but hopefully the result makes for a convincing portrait of this iconic aircraft.
The original was commissioned in 2011 and is now part of a private collection.
